Nakaya Fujiko
Fujiko Nakaya was the first artist to use fog as a scultptural media. This does not mean that she doesn’t fashion it as she wishes: her approach consists of a subtile collaboration with water, wind, and time. Experimental and ephemeral, her fog sculptures are both conceptual and landscape art, while representing a rupture in the history of art and its techniques (in 1970, she and physician Thomas Mee developed a specific system for working).
This work that she considers a medium to transmit shadow and light, sparks from her interest for what she calls “decomposition” or the process of decay. As a student, she painted natural phenomena that were repeated and then dissolved (flowers, series of clouds).
