“Sounding Paths 2019”

The Onassis Stegi in partnership with Syros Institute & Syros Sound Meetings, associate partners of the INTERFACES network, invite musicians, sound artists & intermedia artists of all levels & backgrounds with a documented interest in site-specific and environmentally inspired sound art, composition, improvisation or performance for a joint 10-day- residency in the island of Syros on 5-15 July 2019.

Applications for Sounding Paths 2019 are especially encouraged from student, graduate and professional artists exploring the boundaries between vocal and/or acoustic experimentation and field recordings, writers focusing on environmental and site-specific sound art from a critical or historical angle, as well as practice-based researchers working broadly in the intersections between visual, sonic and/or textual media.

Indicative areas of interest for proposed projects include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Sonic intimacy & poetics of listening
- ‘Hidden’ sounds, unheard music and obsolete media
- Materiality, (dis)embodiment and metaphysics of sound & voice
- Politics of sound recording & archiving
- Aural ecologies
- Human, non-human and post-human soundscapes
- Sonic re-inventions of nature

Participation & accommodation:
Sounding paths is a joint residency, where a small number of selected participants (usually 10 - 15) stay and work in the same building over a period of 10 days. The number of available rooms is very limited, and the final selection of participants depends on a) the total number of applications received each year and b) the degree of affinity between individual participants' interests & proposed subject areas.

Residency participants will be staying in shared 2-bed rooms with WC / shower facilities, at the converted guesthouse of a 17th-century Jesuit Monastery on the historic Ano Syros hillside. Participants will work individually and/or together towards the development of original sound and/or intermedia projects, situated in & inspired by Ano Syros and nearby sites on the island. On the day before departure, all participants are invited to present one or more of their individual and/or collaborative projects in an informal public showcase, organized by Syros Sound Meetings.

Open call applications are submitted online (see details below), and should include a succinct project proposal, accompanied by a cv, relevant samples of work, and payment receipt of an application processing fee of 15 euros (nonrefundable).
Once your application is accepted, participation and accommodation at the residency are free of charge. The program also covers Athens-Syros return ferry tickets on July 5 and 15, and free (optional) participation in a number of activities, including a workshop by the two invited artists, and guided visits to local sites of interest. Beyond that, you will be expected meet your own daily maintenance / food costs, as well as travel costs to and from Greece. We are happy to provide invitation or reference letters where necessary, to assist with grant applications towards travel & subsistence cost coverage.

Please note that we can only accept applications on behalf of individual prospective participants (not on behalf of groups or collectives), and confirmed participants are expected to be present for the full duration of the residency.

How to apply:
1. Read the open call text in full, and fill in your application form (including proposed project description) at https://goo.gl/forms/VtpiXJ7T1HcWF0MI3
2. Make the application fee payment (15 euro) via bank transfer to: Syros Institute, ΙΒΑΝ: GR7802602810000790200978750 (with your name and the designation "Sounding Paths 2019" in the description if possible) Please note that the fee is payable by bank transfer only. If transferring from overseas, please ensure that any additional administrative costs incurred by the bank are covered in your payment. Syros Sound Meetings will not be able to process applications unless the application fee payment has been received in full by the 10 May deadline. The same applies for incomplete applications (e.g. missing project description, contact details or cv).
3. Send the following to soundmeetings@gmail.com:
a) a brief cv
b) any additional samples of your theoretical and/or practical work that you consider relevant
